The excellent circuit simulation that we explored in our lessons is freely available for you to use as part of your independent learning. It was created by the University of Colorado and can be accessed here (or just search for PhET DC simulation).

There are, however, a couple of points that you must remember when using this simulation;

  • The simulation uses an old symbol for resistors and lamps (light bulbs).
  • The circuit symbol that is identified as being a “battery” is in fact a single cell.
  • Use the Lab option and always choose the double-ended ammeter as it is essential that you always insert ammeters inside a circuit so that the current flows through them rather than “looking” at the current at a single point from outside the circuit.

The correct circuit symbols that you are expected to know are given on p133 of the revision guide. You can also download a compilation here.
